Met a redhead on a Grecian isle?

Again, a little downpour tried to disrupt my picture taking. I didn't let it; instead I improvised a turban. This thrifted vest, originally property of a Polish dance troupe, always gets a few remarks when I wear it. If I could read Polish I would tell you more details: there's a label inside with a bunch of blanks filled in by hand. It's very shiny as all of those motifs are different shapes of sequins.

Half empty or half full?

The latest trend in manicures?

And for the record, if you are filling a glass and stop half way, it's half full. If you are drink a glass and stop half way, it's half empty. I think.

Do-Over

Sometimes I consider rewinding my life to about age five and then dedicating all of my energy to becoming an ultimate draw-er. Usually after a couple glasses of wine and several hours drooling over illustrations on weheartit.com and fuckyeahillustration.tumblr.com.

Dreamy

Inspiration for the day comes from this Vogue Russia editorial shot by Paolo Roversi. He's not usually a favorite photographer of mine, but these pictures make me ga-ga. The makeup, the styling, the mood - so creative and lovely. And how cool is it that there's a mood-board featured as well?

Start the car!

Last night Mary and I had plans to go to Carlie's fashion show, but when we got there it was over capacity and had a line up down the block, so we decided our time would be better spent having a relaxing drink with friends. Carlie's latest collection is rad, so it would have been neat to see the show, but we had a really good time with plan B.

These were my two outfit options. On Karl's advice, I went with the above, with the black and silver shoes from below. The sequined pants above were from Value Village, and they are a size 48 or something huge, and the label says "made for Princess Cruises". I can just imagine a large tipsy senior making an impulse buy in the on-board gift shop and then shipping them off to the thrift store as soon as she got home. I took out the zipper and just put in fastenings to wrap the waist to fit. And tapered the ankles.

I will find a great way to wear this skirt sometime. It's Dolce and Gabbana unlined lace, looks unworn, and was $6.99 at VV! I had one of those moments from the Ikea commercial where the woman runs out yelling "Start the car! Start the car!" Yay - love that feeling!

Refreshing

I know I've gone into my feelings regarding flattering vs. interesting before, and I guess these pants from Zara fall into the interesting category. I'll sacrifice trying to trick you into thinking I have skinny hips for kind of a different, refreshing silhouette. Is that OK?

I got new sandals, too! They were pretty cheap and it's been years - how long has the gladiator trend been around? - since I've found sandals I like. The weather even co-operated this afternoon so I could try them out.

Has it been a year already

...since I decided wilting tulips are my favorite things to photograph?

Sniff it good

Questions:
1. What does it smell like?
2. Where can I get a sample?
3. Is it just a coincidence that the first perfume release ($$$) follows the departure of the designer?

Liberty Print

Is it just me or is there a little Winnie Cooper vibe here today? A Peter Pan collar, high-waisted shorts and platform sandals... Wonder Years superfox? Maybe it's a stretch.

I bought these shorts last weekend, and now I'm faced with my annual dilemma - coming to terms with the paleness. OK, I'm wearing pale lavender tights today, but it takes me a while to decide if the legs ever go out in public bare. Cuz there's no sense pretending that I'm going to "get a little colour". I guess the first step is shaving my legs. The last time was... well, I might have done it once in September. Maybe.

This blouse migrated to the back of the closet, but I love the print. I snagged this Liberty print fabric at work and waited years to make something with it because there was so little of it. The blouse is just a titch on the short side, but pairing it with these shorts makes me realize that it's perfect for tucking in to something with a higher waist.

Sweet taste of success

I baked a pretty darn good rhubarb pie today, with the first batch of rhubarb from the garden. I think it may be the best pie I've ever made, thanks to tips from my mom and following the recipe very carefully. I think pie pastry is one of those things you just have to make and make until you are confident that it will always work out. Maybe this will be a summer of pie - I will need some help eating them though! My next goal will be to get the edges of the crust prettier.

The Flowers that Bloom in the Spring

I've had this top for so long, and sometimes I forget about it for months at a time, but I'll be sad to see it go when it finally gives out. It was just a cheapie at Zara, but I love the Art Nouveau-esque floral and the comfy knit. It's probably at least eight years old, and the only repairs it has needed is a couple of stitches in the armpit and a new ribbon tie at the waist, so maybe it has a few more years left in in.

Krista gave me this great necklace for my birthday. I love the Cleopatra-meets-70's-metal-art vibe, and how perfecting it fits into a v-neck.

Do you have any old favorites in your wardrobe you never want to bid adieu?

My First Ebay Purchase

My first online purchase, period. But I guess I didn't even buy it; I picked it out and Karl bought it for me. Anyway, it's a little vintage Coty powder box. When I bought face powder it came in a crappy plastic container that cracked and chipped right away, and I finally decided it was time for something prettier. For a few dollars it's cheerful in the morning and since we don't have a medicine cabinet all my makeup is pretty much on display and this seemed like a nicer look than damaged plastic!

Easter on Quadra Island

Me at the beach, not digging clams at this particular moment.

Mom, me, dog.

Clam haul!

Dad shucking oysters right off the rock.

Dad's gorgeous gumbo. What a treat!

So obviously we had a wonderful weekend, despite a storm delay on Friday. I'd have to say that there is almost nothing Karl and I love more than spending time on Quadra with my parents. The only downside is the depression that comes the day after we return when we try to remember why we don't live there...

Heart Pumping

I always need new music for the gym. These are a few songs that are doing it for me right now. Any suggestions?
